A New Gateway for Learning Through Maps and Weather Data

Komunidad has helped this academic institution to not only protect the welfare of their students that have to go through severe weather conditions, but also offer learners access to datasets for research purposes.

In recent years, the Philippines has had to weather storms that keep getting stronger by the year, and thus pose more damage to our peoples’ lives and communities. With the effects of climate change being more deeply felt by countries, the world is setting its sights on more sustainable and greener campaigns.

Students are also joining this greener movement, focusing mainly on research and development.

But in the Philippines, access to data may sometimes be difficult.

Local government units that are tasked to decide on class suspensions and evacuation calls need to refer to several websites to study past data or to check weather forecasts before disseminating critical information.

Likewise, relevant weather data aren’t readily available to students and academic staff.

Through the Komunidad platform, this educational institution isn’t only empowered to make more informed decisions amid severe weather conditions, but students can also learn more about its impacts on communities and the risks these stronger typhoons are bringing to the country.

Expanding Horizons for Learning

Using the Komunidad platform, university students can dig deeper into learning about the climate, weather changes and environmental hazards.

  • A wealth of knowledge

Users of the Komunidad platform were given access to weather, air quality and climate data. The platform also provided several maps on smart weather stations, lightning strikes, global radar, and even hazard areas — and these are all for students to explore and study.

  • Smart campus

Komunidad has installed smart weather stations that service the two locations of this university, despite considerable distance between the areas. Through these improvements, users are given current and the latest forecast on weather conditions.

Solution Built Using Komunidad

Protecting the Learners

The Philippines sits on the path of 20 storms a year, and for students who experience fickle weather and have to brave through typhoons just to get to school, real-time alerts through their mobile phones come in handy.

Apart from the daily weather outlook straight to their emails, users also automatically receive text alerts on lightning proximity, dangerous thunderstorms and rainfall. These help the university faculty, including the students themselves, to decide on safely heading out for classes and other school activities.
